Day 1: Backstage @ Preen
There’s always a calm, collected and poised atmosphere backstage at Preen. It’s a beautiful show to play a part in, and each season there’s a strong story to tell. Everyone knows their place and in the buzz of creativity lies an unspoken structure. Photographers line the hair and makeup stations, ready to capture the looks as they happen. In the thick of it, models are having their hair, nails and make-up done in sync by a team of experts, to ensure the final look is perfection. Press and influencers capture exclusive tips on how looks are created, inspiration and key products used, knowing that imminently they‘ll reveal all to their readers.
This is my 5th year working with Preen and I’m always drawn to its conceptual approach; unusual, yet beautiful. This season, the show was inspired by Victorian travelling pilgrims, with floating chiffon fabrics adorned with floral patterns. To contrast the feminine lightweight chiffon, I created a more heavy and raw hairstyle to give the look an edge. I wanted the hair to look harder, as if the models had arrived off a boat in a new land, unwashed for weeks and exposed to the elements. Imagine a bonnet lost or discarded, the hair having seen, sun, rain, snow... it's broken and unkempt, yet still with the imprint of the bonnet to bring some of the strictness that defined the era.
Day 2: Backstage @ Tommy
Backstage at the Tommy show is always a Who’s-Who of famous faces, and this year was no exception. With the Hadids out in full force, Gigi leading the show supported by siblings Bella and Anwar and friends including Hailey Baldwin, Sara Sampaio, Georgia May Jagger and Jourdan Dunn continuing the fun, this was the place to be.
Taking place at Camden’s iconic Roundhouse and set to the soundtrack of The Chainsmokers, Tommy’s Rock Circus came to life through a backdrop of aerial acrobatics which set the scene for the reveal of the latest TommyXGigi collection .
With a real rock concert feel to the show this season, I wanted to create a look that was disheveled, raw and full of texture. Each look was individual, diverse and imperfect. I created an anti-cosmetic approach to the hair – a juxtaposition to the glamorous make-up - which allowed the girls personalities to shine.
The feeling for me is still a Tommy Girl, just tougher and more urban. She’s not text book pretty or perfectly groomed straight from the salon. She naturally throws things together, and has her own individual style. She’s the kind of girl everyone wants to be. Totally effortless.
Day 3: Off to Paris
